THE EDUCATIONAL CENTER Eric Nash, Executive Director. Our Pledge and advise to young people worldwide is: If you want to succeed in sport and life, take these words of advice: Abstain and stay off the use of drugs or steroids and the indulgence of alcohol and tobacco, which is most damaging to health and brain power destroying athletic ability and performance. To succeed in sports, or qualify for the Olympics, takes a lot of discipline, following coaches directions and always being on time for the training sessions and events. I strictly observed these rules during my youth and believe them to be necessary and important for success, which we constantly emphasize to young people during lectures in our museum. The International Sports Hall of Fame and Olympic Museum during the years we were in Southern California from1980 to1990, before, during and after the 1984 Olympics, when the main museum was located in Orange County near Disneyland and had frequent visits from school groups, college students and groups from other educational organizations besides many private visitors, the purpose and importance of the Educational Center was received with great enthusiasm by special lectures from former Olympians, which was most interesting to everyone that visited the museum and at present is not available on the remote Oregon Coast, but I hope will eventually happen again if we find sponsors or a large organization, willing to help us get the museum to a large city, where it can be visited by a lot more people than in a coastal community and get the notoriety and prestige back, that it has held while in the Los Angeles area and is most necessary for our youth. Being born into a family that was involved in the Olympics, I was not only active in sports at an early age, but also started to collect Olympic memorabilia when I was attending the 1936 Winter and Summer Olympics in Germany at age ten, and getting all kind of pins, artifacts and even a Torch with Diploma, which meant a lot to me after witnessing the first Olympic Torch Ceremony in Olympia at the ancient Olympic stadium, among the ruins of Ancient Greece, which made a great impression on me, imaging being transformed into the ancient times of Greece. Later, learning and reading more about the ancient Greeks and all the ceremonies that were going on during these festivities, made the ancient Olympics even more interesting for me, and when I was a Torchbearer, running with the Olympic Flame, I was always reminded of that great day in Olympia during the impressive ceremony with all the maidens and priestess transparently dressed, which was such an excitement to watch for a ten year old kid and although the three ceremonies that followed after Olympia, were also quite impressive for me to watch, especially the one at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin during the Opening Ceremony, none was as impressive for me than the ceremony in Olympia and ancient history of the temples of Olympia. Our museum displays pins, badges, medals, uniforms, diplomas, posters and many other rare Olympic items, but it seems that the main attraction among museum visitors, are the Torch Displays and items related to them, possibly because the Torch Runs are often the only Olympic event that can be seen free by the people.
